Verticle grain douglas firs color is typically a light to medium brown with a red tint. Fir is used mostly in plywood and construction material, it would be acceptable for outdoor use, but may attract insects more than other woods. While verticle sawn boards will have the typical flecks, it is also mostly a straight grain, as is the rift or vertical cut boards. Fir is sold as a C-Select grade, meaning clear and no knots. It is also often “scant sawn”, meaning the size is actually less than the described size (i.e., 8/4 x 6”is actually 1-7/8” x 7-3/4”).
