Walnut Lumber
In order to get walnut a consistent colour, it is commonly steamed during the drying process. Walnut sapwood is light to dark brown, and the heartwood is light gray to white. The grain is straight, but may also be wavy. Walnut typically comes in a select and better grade (4” wide and wider) but due to the “wild-ness” of how the trees grow, is subject to different rules than other hardwoods. Walnut grades may allow for more knots, cracks, twists, and heartwood on the face than other hardwoods. A superior grade or “red oak rules” grade may be available, which will have less defects and heartwood, but also comes with a premium price. Walnut is a versatile option, being used in any job large or small.
