Poplar has been identified by some as a soft wood and by others as a hardwood. It is a deciduous tree, so poplar is classified as a hardwood, but it has a low density making it soft. The sapwood is a light cream to yellow-ish brown, and the heartwood is light yellow to white. Poplar has more of a straight grain and is similar in grain and texture to walnut. Poplar is a great choice for trim and molding, interior doors, or upholstered furniture. Due to its softness, poplar has a tendency to fuzz up while milling, needing extra care while sanding. Poplar primarily comes in a face and better grade (5.5” wide and wider, minimal knots, and minimal sapwood on the face).
