White Ash Lumber
Ash is a great woodworking option and is often mistaken for red oak due to the texture and pattern of the grain. The sapwood of Ash can be beige to light brown, and the heartwood may be light to medium brown. Ash will have straight, medium to coarse grain. Over the past 2 decades, the emerald ash borer has wiped out a significant portion of the ash trees. The borer bores into the heartwood of the ash tree to lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the inner parts of the bark, which in turn kills the tree. Ash comes in face and better grade, which is 5.5” wide and wider, and good sapwood color on the face. Due to the ash borer, ash may be harvested sooner which may result in narrower boards.
