Hard Maple Lumber

Rough lumber

Hard maple has a straight and possibly wavy grain, and is often used for plywood veneers, cabinetry, butcher blocks, turning stock, and flooring.  The sapwood of hard maple is utilized more than heartwood. Its sapwood color is white to off-white, and the heartwood may be dark red brown. Grades include face and better (FAS), select and better (may be narrower than face and better) and 1 common (allowing for more knots and cracks). Hard maple is typically sold as a number 1 white, meaning the face and the back of the board will be mostly white sapwood, or a number 1 & 2 white, meaning the face will be white sapwood and the back of the board may be browner heartwood.
