Cedar, Aromatic

Heartwood is reddish to violet-brown. Sapwood is creamy white and at times appears in streaks throughout the heartwood. Aromatic cedar has a fine, even texture with many knots. It has a very distinct aroma, making its use in closets and blanket boxes as a moth deterrent very popular.

Machinability: Machines easily, although the knots can be challenging. The silica content present is relatively hard on cutting edges. Screws easily and glues well.

Density: Specific gravity of .44

Thickness: 4/4, and 6/4 and 8/4 when available.

Grades: 1 Com. & Better

Douglas-Fir, Flat Cut

Douglas-Fir, Flat Cut

The heartwood is light tan to medium brown, changing to orange-brown due to exposure to sunlight and age. It is a very durable wood which is used extensively in industrial applications for wharves, trestles and heavy construction.  It dries evenly and stays stable during use. Because of its many characteristics Douglas-fir is also used for cabinetry, trim, plywood and flooring, etc.

Machinability: Machines well with power tools and holds nails and screws well.  It glues well. Accepts all finishes satisfactorily.

Density: Specific gravity of .53

Thickness: 4/4 and 8/4, kiln dried, and thicker dimensions in air dried.

Grades: C Select

Douglas-Fir, Vertical Grain

Douglas-Fir, Vertical Grain

The heartwood is light tan to medium brown, changing to orange-brown due to exposure to sunlight and age. Usually shows a fine, even grain (contrasting the flat cut appearance) desirable in fine furniture and flooring applications.

Machinability: Machines well although it can exhibit tear-out if the knives are not sharp.

Density: Higher density than flat cut as the grain is much closer together.

Thickness: 4/4, 8/4

Grades: C Select

Pine, Eastern White

X

Pine, Eastern White

Heartwood is a light straw color, slightly darker than the sapwood. Eastern White Pine has a fine, straight grain with a uniform texture. Stains and finishes well.

Machinability: Easy to machine. A good finish can be obtained if the cutting edges are kept sharp. Accepts nails and screws easily, and glues well.

Density: Specific gravity of .35

Thickness: 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 16/4

Grades: C & Better, 1 Com., 1&2 Com.
